If you have purchased bottled water recently you have probably noticed there’s a new H2O in town–coconut water.
With its luring packaging and being touted as a healthy beverage, some people claim coconut water to be a miracle drink! In fact, coconut water is quickly becoming one of the most popular health drinks. It’s predicted that sales will be around the $110 million mark this year!
The Appeal of Coconut Water
What makes coconut water so appealing? Coconut water is pasteurized liquid found inside young coconuts. This low calorie, low-sodium, fat-free beverage is packed with potassium and other nutrients. Some brands include ascorbic acid which provides extra vitamin C. For people who need to lower their blood pressure, coconut water is a great beverage option.
Coconut Water vs. Sports Drinks
As with other waters, some brands of coconut water are being marketed as sports drinks. Buyer beware. For most people, tap water is fine after a workout. It’s not necessary to have the extra sodium or potassium. If someone is doing an intense hour long workout or participating in a sport, then the sodium content in coconut water isn’t at a high enough level to be effective as a sports drink.
Is Coconut Water Worth the Cost?
That’s for you to decide. Perhaps because it’s still a fairly new product and it’s receiving a lot of hype, coconut water is not cheap. Maybe in time we’ll see the price go down.
However, if you enjoy the flavor and it helps you to consume more water on a daily basis, then go for it!

I was wondering what all the hype was about coconut water. I’ve seen it listed on menus and it’s not cheap. I don’t know. It sounds like a new fad. I guess I agree with the last point. If it means you’ll drink more water, then go for it.

I recently tried coconut water and I like it. I’m not totally sold on its health benefits, but I just like that it’s an alternative to plain water. I agree that it is expensive! Thankfully, I’ve had coupons to use.
